Your Arizona Summer Forklift Inspection Checklist

Arizona summers test forklifts in ways that most other climates do not. Temperatures exceeding 110 degrees, fine desert dust that infiltrates every system, and sustained heat stress across multi-shift operations create conditions that can turn minor maintenance oversights into real breakdowns.

Cooling System (Propane and CNG Forklifts)

• Check coolant level in the reservoir and radiator
• Inspect coolant condition — old or contaminated coolant should be replaced regardless of level
• Clean radiator fins with compressed air to remove Arizona dust and debris
• Check radiator hoses for cracks, softness, or deterioration from heat exposure
• Inspect the radiator cap for a proper seal
• Test the thermostat if the engine is running hotter than normal
• Check the water pump for leaks and unusual noise during operation

Dust accumulates in radiator fins faster in Arizona than in most other environments. Make radiator cleaning a standard part of your summer maintenance routine.

Hydraulic System

• Check hydraulic fluid level and inspect condition — color, clarity, and odor
• Replace hydraulic fluid if it is dark, foamy, or shows signs of contamination
• Inspect the hydraulic filter and replace it if clogged or near the end of its service interval
• Check hydraulic hoses for cracking, bulging, abrasion wear, and seepage at fittings
• Inspect cylinder seals for leaking
• Test lift performance for hesitation, slow response, or mast drift when holding a load
• Listen for unusual sounds from the hydraulic pump under load

Battery and Electrical System (Electric Forklifts)

• Check battery water level and top off with distilled water if needed
• Inspect battery terminals for corrosion and clean as needed
• Verify battery connections are tight and secure
• Note charging time versus normal baseline — extended charge times may indicate capacity loss
• Monitor battery temperature after a charge — excessive heat points to a failing cell or watering issue
• Inspect battery cables for wear, fraying, or damage
• Check charging equipment for proper function and secure connections

Arizona heat accelerates water loss in lead-acid batteries. Check water levels more frequently during summer than the standard schedule requires.

Engine and Fuel System (Propane and CNG Forklifts)

• Check engine oil level and condition
• Inspect the air filter for dust and debris clogging
• Check fuel hoses and connections for wear or deterioration
• Inspect propane tank or CNG system connections for leaks
• Verify the fuel regulator is functioning correctly
• Check spark plugs if the engine shows rough idling or reduced power

Tires

• Inspect all tires for wear past the wear indicator line
• Check cushion tires for chunking, cuts, or heat-related cracking
• Check pneumatic tires for proper inflation — Arizona heat increases tire pressure
• Inspect sidewalls for cracking or damage
• Look for embedded debris in tire treads or sidewalls

Mast, Forks, and Lifting Components

• Inspect fork tines for cracks at the heel and along the blade
• Check fork thickness against manufacturer’s minimum specifications
• Inspect mast rails and carriage for cracks, bends, or damage
• Check mast chain tension and inspect for wear, stretch, or damaged links
• Lubricate mast channels and chains if dry
• Verify the backrest extension is secure and undamaged

Brakes, Steering, and Controls

• Test brake pedal response and resistance
• Listen for grinding or unusual sounds during braking
• Inspect brake fluid level and condition
• Test steering response for unusual resistance or play
• Test the horn, all lights, and the backup alarm
• Verify seat belt function and condition
• Check dashboard for any warning lights or fault codes
• Confirm all operator controls respond normally

After Inspection: What to Do

Any item on this checklist that shows an issue should be documented and addressed before the forklift returns to service. Items requiring a qualified technician should be routed to your service provider promptly — especially during the summer, when deferred maintenance escalates quickly in the Arizona heat.
