Utah summers put real stress on forklifts. Temperatures in the Salt Lake Valley regularly climb into the mid-to-upper 90s, and warehouse environments without full climate control can push indoor temps even higher. Heat affects everything from battery performance to hydraulic fluid viscosity to tire integrity, and equipment that does not receive extra attention during summer months tends to show it.
JTS Forklift Service provides mobile maintenance and repair for Utah fleets year-round. Here is what to prioritize heading into summer.
Why Summer Is Harder on Forklifts
Internal combustion engines work harder to manage heat when ambient temperatures are already high. Electric forklift batteries charge less efficiently in hot conditions and lose capacity more quickly under heat stress. Hydraulic fluid thins out at higher temperatures, reducing system pressure and accelerating seal wear. Tires on hot warehouse floors experience faster wear and are more prone to damage.
Heat accelerates wear across multiple systems simultaneously. A forklift that might have reached its next scheduled service during the cooler months may not reach it when summer adds extra strain. For a full overview of our maintenance services, visit our page.
Cooling System Checks
For propane and CNG forklifts, the cooling system is the first priority heading into summer. Check coolant levels and inspect the coolant condition — old or degraded coolant loses its ability to dissipate heat, even when it appears full.
Inspect radiator fins for clogging from dust and warehouse debris. A partially blocked radiator cannot dissipate heat efficiently, leading to elevated operating temperatures and potential engine damage. Check radiator hoses for cracks or soft spots, and verify that the radiator cap seals properly.
Hydraulic Fluid in the Heat
Hydraulic fluid has an optimal operating temperature range. Above that range, it thins out, reducing its ability to maintain system pressure and lubricate internal components. Seals exposed to overheated fluid deteriorate faster, and the hydraulic pump works harder than it should.
Have the hydraulic fluid inspected before summer peaks. If it is approaching the end of its service life, change it. Make sure the hydraulic filter is clean, since a clogged filter restricts flow and forces the system to generate additional heat.
Battery Performance in Hot Weather
Heat is one of the most damaging conditions for lead-acid forklift batteries. High temperatures accelerate the chemical reactions inside the battery, leading to water loss and premature aging. A battery already close to the end of its useful life may fail outright during a heat wave.
Summer battery maintenance should include more frequent water level checks, terminal inspections for corrosion, and monitoring of charging times. Charge electric forklifts in the coolest part of the facility when possible.
Tire Inspection and Care
Hot warehouse floors and intense outdoor sun are tough on tires. Cushion tires can become brittle and develop chunking in extreme heat. Pneumatic tires used outdoors should be checked for proper inflation — heat increases air pressure, and overinflated tires are more prone to failure.
Inspect all tires for wear beyond the wear indicator line, cracks, or missing chunks from the contact surface, and sidewall damage. Damaged tires compromise load stability and increase the risk of tip-over.
Signs Your Forklift Is Struggling With Summer Heat
Watch for these indicators during summer operations:
- The engine temperature gauge is running higher than normal
- Lifting speed has slowed during or after extended use
- The battery is draining faster than usual per shift
- A burning or unusual smell near the engine or hydraulic components
- Tires showing visible damage or rapid wear progression
- The forklift is triggering warning lights more frequently
Any of these signs warrants a service call before the issue escalates. For general forklift repair throughout Utah, see our page. For urgent situations, our team is available 24/7. You can also explore our full page for more information. Call (801) 300-2290 to schedule a summer service visit.
